University of Georgia Hugh Hodgson School of Music

The following information constitutes a brief summary of the music program and the audition requirements and is provided by the DEN as a courtesy. Be sure to contact the school directly for further details and for all application guidelines.

The University of Georgia Hugh Hodgson School of Music offers a wide range of undergraduate and graduate programs. Undergraduate programs include the Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in music or interdisciplinary fields and the Bachelor of Music degree with majors in composition, music education, music therapy, theory, or performance. The School also sponsors an annual study abroad program in Italy that is open to all majors. Programs designed for the non-music major include a minor in music at the undergraduate level and a certificate program in music business, as well as opportunities to participate in numerous courses and ensembles.

Graduate offerings include the Master of Arts, Master of Music, Master of Music Education, Education Specialist, Doctor of Education, Doctor of Musical Arts and Doctor of Philosophy degrees. Within the various programs majors are offered in performance, conducting, music composition, music literature, musicology/ethnomusicology, and music education.

Scholarships at the undergraduate level and assistantships at the graduate level are available.

Undergraduate Piano Audition Requirements (Non-Performance Major)
• From memory, a Baroque composition
• From memory, two or more works in contrasting styles chosen from the following eras: Classical, Romantic, Impressionistic, or 20th/21st century
• Sight-reading

Undergraduate Piano Audition Requirements (Performance Major)
Those intending to major in performance should prepare a 15 minute audition including:

• A Prelude and Fugue from the Well-Tempered Clavier by J.S. Bach
• A movement from a Classical Sonata (except Beethoven Op. 27/2, 49/1, 49/2, and 79)
• A composition from the Romantic period
• A 20th/21st century composition
• Sight-reading

Undergraduate Music Minor Audition Repertoire
From memory: Minimum of two solo piano compositions in contrasting styles selected from the Classical piano repertoire. Choose from the following stylistic eras: Baroque; Classical; Romantic; Impressionistic; and Modern. No jazz, improvisations, pop, or original compositions will be accepted. In addition, transcriptions, arrangements, and hymn settings are not acceptable.
